Great Cabin Lake

A couple of miles from my place is Great Cabin Lake. It's not a big lake, and there's only one small cabin there. Said cabin is little more than a shack, really, around 100 square feet (10 m2). The lake is too acidic to have any fish in it.

But the location still is wonderful. And this cabin is much further away from the logging road than mine, and thus more isolated. I can't help myself thinking man, this is a cool place, imagine living here.

Below is the view on the way from my place to Great Cabin Lake.

Would the water be too acidic to drink too, if filtered? Or do you already have a convenient source near at hand? What a beautiful blue color that is! And a nice little valley that it sits in! Truly something nice...

I to have imagine living in a lil cabin in the middle of nowhere and fixing it up. Too bad about the lake!

Hudson, Diane,
I must admit I'm pretty cavalier about drinking the water up here. Never heard of giardia or related nastiness. But the water in this little lake would taste sort of brackish. I'd use the same rainwater method I use at my place.

And yes, it is beautiful, isn't it?

Possibly a silly question, but why is the lake acidic?

Andy,
Not a silly question! All forests of this type have acidic soils, and also water from bogs and marshes.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bog

Streams from underground reservoirs and rivers from the mountains are sweet and quite ph-neutral.

Acidic or not; I'm proud we have such an amazing wilderness so close to our capital, Oslo.
